Melchior Mataki
30754086@student.murdoch.edu.au
Melchior Mataki is a PhD student from the Solomon Islands and a recipient of Ausaid scholarship.
He has an undergraduate degree in chemistry and mathematics, and a research-based Masters
in analytical chemistry from the University of the South Pacific (USP), Fiji.
After teaching at USP from 2003-2008, he joined as the Programme Manager and Fellow at
the Pacific Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development at USP, where he was
involved in applied and policy research work on waste management, climate change and
natural resource management. One of the key threats to human health and the natural
environment is poor management of solid wastes. Over the past 30 years, Pacific Island
Countries (PICs) have been working towards improving their solid waste management practices,
however, the efforts have not been very successful, solid waste level and toxicity grew unabated.
This conundrum brings to the fore the issue of what paradigm should inform solid waste management in PICs.
Melchior's PhD research is aimed at identifying and authenticating a
context-appropriate paradigm for SWM in PICs using the Solomon Islands as a case study..
