Sustainability is about developing lifestyles, practices and technologies that nurture human communities and the wider ecological communities which support them. The Waalitj buildings form an innovative, evolving system to demonstrate and promote technologies that are based on the ethic of caring for people and the earth. The complex has been designed to fit into its surroundings; minimise the use of energy, water, materials; treat sewage on site; harvest rainwater and generate electricity from the sun.

The Waalitj building at the ETC was awarded the 2002 Western Australian Environment Award in the Eco-building category.
