During 1990-92
RADG provided technical support to the Centre for Appropriate Technology
in Alice Springs for the national water study in remote Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander communities. The study had been commissioned
by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commission as a result
of the appalling conditions at Toomelah coming under the national media
spotlight. It was soon realised that many other communities faced similar
circumstances. The study provided an overview of the situation in these
communities in an international context; documented two case study
communities in each mainland State and Territory as well as the Torres
Strait Islands; identified factors hindering the development of satisfactory
water and sanitation; and initiated community-based action plans with
strong recommendations for State and Federal authorities.
The Project Partner was the Centre
for Appropriate Technology.
