| ETC and SATC further partnership
| with development of new ESTIS powered site “ESTsa”

As an exciting outcome of the visit from the South Australian Tourism Commission has been the development of a new Environmentally Sound Technologies- Information System (ESTIS) site. The SATC ESTIS site, known as ESTsa, will compliment the SATCs’ Design Guide to Innovative and Sustainable Tourism Development.

The project group, consisting of Dr Martin Anda, Gregory Priest and Noraisha Oyama, has been busy refining the site structure and uploading information on a range of Environmentally Sound Technologies to the database.

ESTsa will play an important role in providing access to information on ESTs to Developers of Tourism projects in South Australia. Developers will be able to conduct searches within the database for Technologies grouped within these four major focus groups:

  • WATER
  • ENERGY
  • WASTE
  • BUILT ENVIRONMENT

It is hoped that ESTsa will enable Developers to make informed decisions on technology choice and encourage them to integrated more sustainable features into their development projects.

The Design Guide, being produced with the aid of Gall & Medek Consultancy team in Brisbane, is due to be completed in December of this year and will feature on the ESTsa site.

The key objectives of the Design Guide are to:

  • Reinforce the vision and directions in the SA Tourism Plan i.e. strategically develop accommodation.
  • Seek to align developer thinking with emerging planning policy
  • Assist development authorities in the assessment of emerging tourism developments.
  • Review current best practice tourism facilities throughout Australia and develop a user-friendly document, which provides clear and practical performance criteria and design techniques suitable to South Australia.
  • Form partnerships with government agencies that will facilitate sustainable tourism development outcomes.

The database is still in development phase and as such is not available for general viewing. Once the database is populated the technologies will be submitted to the UNEP-IETC for further verification and eventual publishing on the maESTro and ESTIS global databases.
