2003 is the 10th
year for which ETC members have been delivering the undergraduate unit
N210 "Environmental Technology for Sustainable Development".
Dr Kuruvilla Mathew, seen below giving some of the students a tour of
onsite wastewater recycling facilities at the ETC, initiated the unit
and commenced writing the course guide in 1993 with the support of Jeff
Kenworthy (now an Assoc Prof in sustainable cities in ISTP). Dr Mathew
ran the course initially with lecturing and tutoring support from Don
Harrison and Martin Anda and other guest lecturers. Since then the team
that deliver the course has included Prof Goen Ho, Dr Jaya Nair, Michael
Penberthy, Emma Yuen, Phil Calais, Prof Richard Bell, Dr Pratap Pullammanappallil
and most recently Joshua Byrne. Each year between 50 and 130 students
have enrolled in the unit. The unit provides level 2 students with an
introduction to the range of environmentally sustainable technologies
available to create sustainable human settlements across the 4 key areas
of water, energy, food and shelter (materials). There is a focus on
developing countries and remote Aboriginal communities and what social
and economic factors may need to be considered as well as technical.
The team will have a BBQ and party with the students later in the semester
to celebrate the 10th anniversary.
