Green Skills is now on the ETC site having moved into the Wardung building at the end of July. It is an exciting new development for the Green Skills metropolitan office and an opportunity for Green Skills to undertake more joint projects promoting sustainability with the ETC. Staff and students at the ETC are already actively working with Green Skills staff on the south coast on waste management systems for the Denmark Centre for Sustainable Living. Partnerships are of paramount importance in securing project funds and the synergies between Green Skills and the ETC indicate that we will be a very successful partnership.

Green Skills was established in 1989 and has offices in Perth, Mundijong, Denmark and Albany. Green Skills is committed to the promotion and demonstration of sustainability by supporting the creation of sustainable employment opportunities. This is achieved by providing quality training and employment services and through the management of a range of projects.

Green Skills is a Registered Training Organisation delivering training for Conservation & Land Management traineeships at Certificate I, II and III levels (project partner Department of Education & Training (DET).

Green Skills is also registered to deliver Horticultural traineeships and a Certificate IV qualification in Assessment and Workplace Training.

Green Skills provides accredited and non accredited training in the following areas:

  • Bushcare
  • Weed management
  • Wetlands management
  • Organic Farming
  • Farm Forestry & Silviculture
  • Propagation
  • Energy Conservation
  • Sustainable Living

They have just completed development and piloting of a course on Saltland Pasture Revegetation (Saltland Pasture Association)

Several Green Skills staff have been carrying out a research project to Examine Opportunities for the Training Sector to Contribute to Supporting the State Sustainability Strategy (DET)

Green Skills provides specialist services in the area of ‘green and sustainable jobs’ under the Employment Directions Program this includes running workshops for high school students, providing staff development for EDN staff and regularly updating website information on training, and work and volunteer experience placements (DET & Lotterywest).

They are commencing a project to run workshops in various WA regional centres in 2005 on the growth of environmental jobs and a metropolitan conference will hopefully be held towards the end of next year. This is following on from our earlier survey work on Environmental Jobs in WA carried out in 2002. (DET & others)

Ecojobs Environmental Personnel provides the opportunity for short term paid work experience for workers on the database to be employed on various environmental projects. Most work involves weed control and revegetation and clients include local government authorities, state government agencies and private consultants.

Green Skills is about to commence management of a 6month Green Corps Project based in the Jarrahdale Heritage Park (Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale)

Green Skills runs Environmental Job Skills Weeks throughout the year for people of all ages who want to gain more experience in the environmental area, learn new practical skills to strengthen their resume, meet people and make contacts. Job Skills Weeks are normally held on the South Coast, but interest can be registered at the Murdoch Green Skills office. (DET)

Other projects currently under development include one involved with local wetland conservation (Lotterywest) and another to promote the incorporation of sustainable technologies in new house design (SEDO).
