| Gary ‘honoured’ to be associated with home

The Subiaco Sustainable Demonstration home (SSDH) has been developed by the City of Subiaco in conjunction with associated sponsors to create a leading example of ecologically sensitive housing design.

The home is a cooperative partnership between business, local government and University to educate the community about environmentally friendly and energy efficient housing by using a new and innovative technique – by building a display home designed purely for educational purposes.

Gary James, an honours student at Murdoch University who is on scholarship with Solar Dwellings to undertake research into sustainable building and living said, “This is a fantastic opportunity to see whether passive solar buildings are capable of having a comfortable internal temperature without depending on the outside conditions”

“My passion has always been looking at ways of minimising the environmental damage that results from our current lifestyles – and the Subiaco Sustainable Demonstration Home does just that. In a way we are creating an ecological blueprint for the future, and for me that is extremely exciting.”

Gary’s research will investigate the thermal performance of the SSDH to determine whether it falls with in the design and planned parameters. The research will:

  • Analyse the passive solar design of the SSDH
  • Apply sustainable building assessment tools on the SSDH
  • Assess the effectiveness of the various assessment tools

The research project will be for 12 months with the monitoring component to capture 6 months worth of data. With monitoring of this type of housing being extremely limited throughout Australia, this will form an important part of the housing industry in the future. All monitoring results will be published on the SSDH’s dedicated website www.subiacosustainable.com.au.
