The
BSc in Environmental Technology is an initiative of Murdoch Universitys
School of Environmental Science. It is the first such course in Western
Australia and is spurred by the rapidly growing environmental technology
industry. Murdoch University has had a long established and internationally
reputable Environmental Technology Centre. It is a Centre of Excellence
and a United Nations Environment Programme Cooperation Centre. The expertise
and facilities of the Centre are made available to the course.
Environmental
Technology is not only about pollution and its control, the management
of wastes and minimizing the impact of human activities on the environment.
It is more and more about using technologies to ensure that we live
in a sustainable world. It is about closing the material loops (waste
is one sector becoming raw material in another for example). Emphasis
is given to the integration of technologies (both high and low) in the
areas which support life (water, food, energy and materials).
The
Environmental Technology degree is structured so as to provide you with
the basics of environmental science and its application (technology)
to achieve sustainability both in the local and international context.
The Bachelor of Science degree can be completed in three years, or four
years with Honours.
Environmental
Technology Careers
Graduates in Environmental Technology find employment in the public
and private sectors, environmental consulting firms and international
environmental agencies in implementing sustainability agendas; in a
wide range of industry, including water, agriculture, construction,
mining and waste management, and with local government in implementing
Local Agenda 21 and sustainable communities.
Minors
and Double Majors
By carefully choosing your elective units it is possible to combine
your Environmental Technology degree with another within the University
so as to graduate with a double major or with a major and one or two
minors. For example, you may wish to undertake a Bachelor of Science
degree with a double major in Environmental Technology and Energy Studies,
Engineering or Sustainable Development; with a major in Environmental
Technology and a minor in Chemistry or Marine Science.
